In May 2004, at the age of 38, I started my journey in the martial arts.
I have been interested
in the martial arts for most of my life, but for one reason or another never
seriously pursued that interest. My oldest daughter, Abby, was invited to a
Tae Kwon Do class at Heath Baptist by a friend in April of 2004. When I found
about this opportunity I insisted that she go. I strongly believe that in the
world today, every girl should be able to protect themselves. A few weeks later
while I was talking about how happy I was about what Abby was doing, she asked
me “If you are such a strong believer in the benefits of Martial Arts,
why don’t you go with Abby? Besides it would give you something to do
together.” Who could argue with that? I went to the next class and watched.
I then talked to Grand Master Engard about his history, the class, his faith
and why he was teaching. I was impressed and started the next week.
