Hickory Nut Cake

1 ½ cp sugar ½ tsp nutmeg
½ cp shortening ¼ tsp salt
2 cps flour 1 cp milk
2 tsp baking powder 1 cp finely chopped hickory nuts
3 egg whites, stiffly beaten

Mil sugar and shortening. Sift flour and dry ingredients. Add milk and nuts. Fold in egg whites. Bake at 350 or approximately 25 minutes.

ICING

2 ½ Tbsp flour ½ tsp vanilla
½ cp milk ½ cp finely chopped hickory nuts
½ cp oleo 1 cp powdered sugar
Pinch of salt ½ cp sugar

Blend flour and milk. Cook over low heat to very thick paste, about 10 minutes; cool. Cream oleo and sugar; add salt, flour, milk paste. Beat with egg. Fold in vanilla and nuts. Can add maple or carmel flavoring.
